House classics do something new music cannot: they trigger a memory. For a crowd roughly between thirty and fifty-five that is the difference between a full and a half-empty floor. The genre works particularly well at reunions, anniversaries, staff parties and event concepts built explicitly on recognition.

The trap is that classics quickly turn into a nostalgia medley. A DJ who commands the genre uses the well-known records as anchors and fills the space between them with material that carries the same energy without feeling like a greatest-hits set. That keeps it a DJ set rather than a jukebox.
